Last month we talked about heartworms, now we are going to talk about the other pesky bugs, fleas and ticks. Last year was a very bad year for fleas because of the mild winter.  Guess what, Mother Nature did it again.  With our second year in a row of mild winter, we can expect another bad flea season.

At Green Oaks North Pet Hospital we have several options to help you keep from getting overrun.  The important thing to know is that every pet in the house needs to be on some type of flea prevention.  Also, it is important to know that in most cases you cannot use the same products on cats that you would use on a dog, so be sure anything you put on a cat says it is for cats.

If you get your pet’s heartworm prevention from us directly, then your pet is already protected against fleas.  Both the Trifexis and Advantage Multi that we recommend for dogs and the Revolution that we recommend for cats will control fleas on your pet when given as directed.  If you are having a problem with ticks then we have a new product, Seresto, to help prevent them.  It is a collar, but unlike other collars, it has no smell and is not coated with a nasty powder that is going to come off all over your house.  One of the best things about Seresto collars is that one collar will provide 8 months of tick prevention, even if your pet wears it swimming.  The collars will also kill fleas, and are safe to use at the same time as the heartworm/ flea combination.

If you are having a problem with fleas or ticks, or just want to spare your pet the misery of being chewed up, let us know and we will help you get the appropriate care for your pet.
